Brownlee fusese diagnosticat cu cancer in urma cu 3 luni si urma un tratament agresiv impotriva bolii.

Mii de fani au tinut sa-i onoreze memoria la meciul cu Leeds United, din campionat. Tribunna suporterilor lui Middlesbrough a fost luminata cu mii de telefoane mobile, gest copiat apoi in tot stadionul in semn de solidaritate.

Brownlee, fost angajat al BBC, a devenit celebru in toata lumea pentru comentariuld e la Boro - Steaua, meciul care a marcat istoria recenta a ros-albastrilor. Dupa 1-0 la Bucuresti, Steaua a pierdut cu 4-2 in deplasare si a ratat prezenta in finala cu Sevilla.
